Drivers and pedestrians experienced short delays March 20-24 at the four-way stop at the Wilsonville/Boeckman/Stafford/Advance intersection. From roughly 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., road crews worked to lay underground sewer lines across the intersection to connect the future Meridian Creek Middle School with the municipal sewer system.

Although the bulk of intersection construction wrapped Friday, March 24, project lead and Wilsonville Development Engineering Manager Steve Adams said that construction in the area won't end until July.

"The sewer line gets extended down Advance Road so impacts along Advance will continue for the next couple of weeks," Adams said, adding, "The contractor has requested closure of a section of Advance Road, east of Wilsonville Road, from April 30 through the first three weeks of May. So that's going to come up and we'll have some of our message sign boards put out in April forewarning people of that pending closure."

SPOKESMAN PHOTO: CLAIRE GREEN - Cars stacked up during morning and afternoon traffic rushes at the intersection, but most delays were short.

The April closure will be to rebuild large sections of the road that will be torn up during other construction projects related to the school.

"The work in that area goes on into July," Adams said. "Lots of con-

struction work going. I wish the weather was a little bit better, but (contractors are) under a tight deadline to get everything done by July... They're on track."

At a special meeting last Thursday the West Linn City Council supported their Planning Commission's decision to approve the School District's application for a conditional use permit to rebuild Sunset Primary School. The School Board, on Monday night, approved the awarding of the contract bid for the construction of Sunset Primary to Triplett Wellman Construction. A groundbreaking ceremony for the new school will be held at 9:15 a.m. this Thursday morning. We thank all who have been involved in and supportive of each of the processes necessary to move this vision toward reality.

  • Bond Update: Sunset Primary School - A message from Superintendent Bill Rhoades

Posted by Amy Berger at 5/31/2016

On April 14th the West Linn Planning Commission voted to approve the application for a conditional use permit for the rebuilding of Sunset Primary School. On May 23rd and 24th the West Linn City Council considered an appeal to the planning commission decision. Late on the evening of the 24th the Council voted to deny the appeal and uphold the Planning Commission's decision to approve the application with one condition. When the Council met on May 26th to sign for the final decision, new language had been introduced to the condition and the Council could not agree to sign. The District has graciously granted a continuance allowing the council to meet again on June 2nd where we are optimistic that they will finalize their May 24th vote upholding their Planning Commission's decision to approve our application.

  • Sunset Primary School Bond Updates - A message from Superintendent Bill Rhoades

Posted by Amy Berger at 5/13/2016

Superintendent Message: Sunset Primary School Bond Update:

We have received a number of questions related to the Sunset Primary School Bond Project so I wanted to take the opportunity to provide an update and information.

On April 14, 2016, after several meetings, The City of West Linn Planning Commission approved the Sunset Primary School Conditional Use Permit. The document issuing the final decision and findings of the Planning Commission can be found on our website at: http://www.bond.wlwv.k12.or.us/

On April 28th several Sunset residents under the name of "Save Our Sunset Park" appealed this decision to The West Linn City Council who have scheduled a public hearing on May 23 & 24, 2016 @ 6:00 p.m. at City Hall.

The appellant has shared concerns that the construction of the new school will ruin Sunset Park, cause serious harm to trees, create flooding and activate landslides in the area between the school and I-205.

The facts and findings actually indicate that with construction of a new school in the Sunset neighborhood adjacent to Sunset Park, the entire area will be revitalized, enhanced, and increase safety for both public education and for recreational opportunities and enjoyment. Renderings of the future site can be found on our website at: http://www.bond.wlwv.k12.or.us/cms/lib8/OR01001812/Centricity/Domain/1994/Renderings%20March%2029%202016.pdf

The City Parks Department has already begun planning to enhance the recreation amenities in Sunset Park in cooperation with residents and the neighboring Sunset School.  The new school will have a new improved and expanded playground and equipment that will be available to students each day and public use during non-school hours.

The site will also have a new large sports field for school play and community athletics for youth softball, baseball, soccer, etc.  Finally, the site will have a new parking lot for 88 vehicles that will be available for school and community/park activity.

District engineers and geologists, in agreement with City Engineers, agree and assure the storm water management facility will generate less run-off, no flooding from the development, and downhill soils will actually be more stable.  Further, a team of arborists conclude that trees will not be impacted and will be preserved into the future.

Overall, the development and construction of the New Sunset School in relation to a revitalized Sunset Park will greatly enhance the safety and livability of the Sunset area.

For more detailed information we have prepared a Q&A document that can be found at: http://www.bond.wlwv.k12.or.us/cms/lib8/OR01001812/Centricity/Domain/1963/Sunset%20QA%205-12-16.pdf or please visit the Sunset Project website at: http://www.bond.wlwv.k12.or.us/
